Admittedly: The Sonnenberg (also called Sunnenberg) is not particularly intimidating with its just over 630 meters of elevation, and the observation tower, which is only 22 meters high and located directly on the cantonal border, appears less spectacular than some other towers in our hiking region. Yet this summit is rightly a popular excursion destination because the panorama from the tower room proves surprisingly diverse and stretches far beyond the region. On clear weather days, even the Bernese trio Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau can be seen. Additionally, a fire pit, playground, and on Sundays the cozy tower café, operated by the Nature Friends Möhlin, attract visitors.
From the signpost near the Mitteldorf bus stop in Zeiningen, we walk westward through the village, pass a sports field, and enter the forest. Here, yellow diamonds guide us further to the ridge. A narrow path leads us up to the small forest clearing at the summit of Sonnenberg, 632 m, and the observation tower. On the Fricktal Ridgeway, descend in a few switchbacks to the Little Sonnenberg (Chlei Sunnenberg), where the path soon becomes flatter and sunlit as it follows the forest edge. Shortly after, we reach another viewpoint called Galgen. Now sharply right. We continue to lose elevation and return to the forest. At a junction where the yellow-marked hiking trail and the Fricktal Ridgeway separate, we follow the latter into the back Serbenweg, but only until the next fork shortly after, where we leave the Ridgeway and instead follow the arrow of the Helsana Trail.
