Sonnenberg and Hornstein Ruins
The westernmost part of the Leitha Mountains offers hikers a variety of options for ascents and crossings, especially because all valley towns are easily accessible by public transport. On this tour, we hike across the ridge from Müllendorf to Hornstein and back again, passing the Sonnenberg lookout, the Hornstein castle ruins, and the idyllic St. George's Chapel.
We begin our tour at Wienerstraße in Müllendorf at the Angerweg bus stop and walk a bit along the street to the gas station, where a small alley leads half left, shortly meeting Villagasse. We follow this left uphill. We stay in the valley, pass several old villas, and finally reach a nature trail along a picturesque stream into the forest. We pass a rest area with a side path leading right down to the fountain house. Five minutes later, the path forks: the red-marked nature trail heads left uphill, while we go right down and cross the stream. Occasionally, white markings appear on trees. We hike about 15 more minutes along the valley floor, then the path turns right into a side valley where it goes steeply uphill. After another 15 minutes, we reach a rest bench at the red-white-red marked long-distance hiking trail 02 running on a wide forest road; we go left uphill with only moderate incline. We cross a blue marking, which leads right to Eisenstadt and left to Hornstein but stay on
