No one should hastily judge this supposedly destroyed gem! Undoubtedly, the access road, large parking lot, lake hotel, and sometimes enormous visitor crowds have taken away some of its beauty. But in late autumn, when peace finally sets in and long tree shadows seem to suffocate the small lake, all sins are forgotten! Early in the morning, one must walk the magnificent meadow path from Stern via Sottsass, before carefully, meter by meter, circling the enchanting lake where the giant walls of Heiligkreuzkofel and Lavarella reflect so uniquely.
From the parking lot in Stern near the church, take the road north on level ground until it turns right towards the lower village area. Continue straight on level ground to the last houses, then follow trail no. 10 partly over beautiful meadows and partly through forest patches uphill northwards to the farms of Sottsass, 1491 m. On a natural road over meadows, gently downhill to the north to a right turn (left turn-off of trail no. 5 to Gardenazzahütte) and continue straight on footpath to the nearby Sompuntsee, 1460 m, with hotel-restaurant, access road, and parking lot. The romantic lake can be circled on a good shore path (beautiful motifs, many benches). Return to Stern on the same route.
