Maps and guides: Tabacco map sheet 019; Fabio Paolini, *Hiking in the Tarvisio Area*, published by Guarnerio Mont (2nd ed.), 2022Roadbook
From the starting point on Via Bamberga, near the Tarvisio-Boscoverde train station, follow a dirt road that winds uphill through the coniferous forest and quickly leads to the monument dedicated to the Austrian soldiers who fell during the Napoleonic Wars. This monument is located on a small hill at the edge of the Slizza Creek gorge. From here, a trail marked with signs and equipped with steps, handrails, and fences descends steeply through the woods in a series of small switchbacks to the bank of the Slizza Creek, reaching a wide bend.
The trail continues up the gorge on the right bank of the Slizza Stream, featuring spectacular cantilevered walkways built over the water, which make it easier to navigate the most exposed rocky sections. Even in this first part of the route, you can admire the limestone rocks eroded by the water, a variety of vegetation, and the striking green color of the stream’s waters.
After passing the first set of footbridges, the trail descends slightly to the stream bank and then climbs again until it reaches a tunnel. After passing through this tunnel, a wooden staircase leads to a rocky outcrop where a memorial stone dedicated to Count Karl d’Arco Zinneberg stands. From this point, you can admire the iron railway bridge of the old Tarvisio–Ljubljana line, which rises 63 meters above the water’s surface and spans a length equal to its height.
After descending along the bank and passing through a large cave, you climb back up via an iron and wooden staircase to the final set of footbridges. At the end of these, the trail winds its way up through the woods until it reaches a lookout point. After a final uphill stretch through the woods, you reach the bike path and quickly return to the starting point.
