On Hexenberg above one of the largest periodic lakes
Lake Cerknica is the largest periodic lake in Europe; its water seeps into the karst fissures underground in the summer and refills with the autumn rains. Lush meadows then spring up on the lake bed, where livestock graze. The most beautiful view of this natural wonder is from Slivnica, north of the lake: depending on the season, we see either a vast expanse of water or green pastures. According to legend, witches once lived on the mountain. A cave at the summit, from which fog sometimes emerges, was considered a gathering place for witches in the Middle Ages.
From the parking lot, we cross the street, follow a wide path past a power pole, turn left at a fork, cross a sandy road twice, and enter a pine forest. The path becomes a trail, leading from the forest to the right into a clearing, crossing it, and continuing on the other side into the forest (15 min. from the parking lot). The trail is now a well-trodden, wide path, climbs gently, and eventually joins a gravel road coming up from the left. Shortly afterward, a path branches off to the right, but we stay on the wide gravel track, leave the forest behind, and hike along a beautiful, open ridge and across colorful flower meadows to a house, Konjski plac, at 940 m, where the wide path ends. We follow a trail across meadows—where the lily of the valley blooms in early summer—and through the forest to Dom na Slivnici (1,075 m), from where we have a magnificent view down to the lake. Passing the hut, we continue uphill and across the hut’s parking lot to the summit of Slivnica. Back at the
