Along with the trail through the Mengusovská Valley between Štrbské and Popradské pleso, this loop hike is one of the most popular routes in the Slovak High Tatras. No wonder, since both the ascent and the descent can be managed with the help of the cable car, and the actual hike follows a very well-maintained, only moderately descending section of the Tatra Magistrale. The mountain lake Skalnaté pleso (Steinbachsee, with a nature trail) is fully visible only during the spring months and dries up as the year progresses, but in the barren and dry high valley of Skalnatá dolina (Steinbach Valley), it’s a welcome splash of water. The nearby settlement—or rather, the Skalnaté Pleso complex—featuring the old cable car station and hotel building, as well as the observatory perched slightly higher up, was built between 1936 and 1943.
After taking the cable car from Tatranská Lomnica, we follow the red-marked Tatra Magistrale trail from Skalnaté Pleso, first passing the small Skalnatá chata hut, and then continue southward on a gently descending traverse across the scree slopes of the Lomnitzer Peak massif. After a good 30 minutes, a new view of the Veľká and Malá Studená dolina valleys opens up behind the foothills of the Lomnický hrebeň (Lomnický Ridge). From the Lomnická vyhliadka viewpoint (mountain hut), in addition to the peaks of Prostredný hrot and Slavkovský štít, you can also make out today’s destination, Hrebienok. From the fork in the trail below the Zamkovského chata hut—which can be reached via a short detour—we continue downhill. We pass the Obrovský vodopád waterfall, cross the Veľký Studený potok stream, turn slightly right at the Pod Húpačkami fork, and go straight ahead at the next fork, Nad Rainerovou chatou. Finally, we reach the Hrebienok Mountain Hotel via an easy traverse, from where we take
