The first intermediate destination of the hike is the Singer Berg, a shell limestone hard rock. From there, the trail leads through pine forest and over meadows down to the village of Singen, where a detour to a rustic brewery is highly recommended. In the past, almost every village brewed its own beer and often had a "beer house," but most of these did not survive into modern times. However, the Schmitt Brewery continues the Thuringian tradition of small breweries in a very rustic manner, long before the buzzword "craft beer" became popular. Further along, the path leads through an idyllic meadow valley down to the Ilm River, where strangely shaped black towers catch the eye: the historic headframes of the Oberilm saltworks, protected as a technical monument, which pumped brine from depths of up to 600 meters between 1904 and 1997.
From the parking lot, the first stop on the tour is Dörnfeld, where we take Lindenstraße to the left in the village center. At the northern edge of the village, from a bus turnaround, a field path branches off to the right leading up the lower slope of the Singer Berg. At the forest edge we take the grassy path sharply to the right and walk level along the west flank of the Singer Berg until we turn left onto an uphill path in the forest ("Jakobsmuschel" symbol). At a small clearing we meet a cross path and follow it to the right. It now ascends quite quickly in sections and circles a rock nose below the summit on a narrow path. Behind it, a trail climbs in short switchbacks up to the summit plateau of Singer Berg, where we orient ourselves at a first rest spot slightly to the right. After 200 m we reach another rest hut and continue our hike with the steep drop of the terrain to the right as we head east. The descent to Singen proceeds with a pleasant gradient over wide switchbacks,

Sabine Gilcher
