This route will guide the hiker from Apollonia to the wide beach of Platys Gyalos through terraced fields with their irrigation channels and places of religious interest.
The trail starts in Apollonia and leads at first to Kato Petali, through a beautifully constructed trail, that used to be the main road between the two villages. Passing between well-kept cultivated terraces it will eventually pass next to the church of "Panagia to Straopodi". Its name apparently indicates that the church hosted at some point a statue of Pan, the goat-legged God of the ancient greek mythology. About one kilometer later, you will reach the Holy Monastery of Vryssi, (16th c.), that now hosts a museum of Ecclesiastic Art as well.
Leaving the monastery behind, the trail will move again between terraces and olive groves. At some point you will have to walk on the main road for about 3oo meters (be very careful!). After the tarmac road, you will get into another old trail that leads to Platys Gyalos. On the last descent, try to notice the small irrigation canals that bring the water from Vryssiana spring to the fields of Platys Gyalos. Platys Gyalos is one of the longest beaches of the Cyclades. In older times the settlement of the same name was one of the main centers of ceramics production in Sifnos.
Author’s recommendation
Take only memories, leave only footprints. Ants and other insects or animals have not yet discovered how to consume plastic. Take all rubbish back with you.
Don’t start a fire if you feel cold. Try walking faster.
Smoking on the trail will not help in anything. Neither you, nor the risk of fire.
Local people are not a tourist sight! If you want to take a picture, kindly ask. They will certainly smile to you!
If you find a door on the trail, pass freely, and leave it as you found it.
Stay on the trail. There is a reason why for many centuries people chose to walk on them and not elsewhere.
