The Serrahner Beech Forests still bear witness today to what the primeval forests in Germany once looked like. Therefore, they have been protected as a World Natural Heritage Site by UNESCO since 2011. The old forest area with its lakes, moors, and meadows has largely been left to nature for decades. Cranes, sea and fish eagles breed in the water-rich landscape, and fungi and insects find plenty of deadwood and thus a rare habitat in the natural forests.
Author’s recommendation
A recommended detour from Serrahn is to the 2 km long and up to 31 m deep Schweingarten Lake. The water of the lake is brown-colored due to inflowing moor water and the decomposition of leaves from the beech forest. Under these special conditions, specially adapted plants and animals find an ideal habitat.

Roadbook
You can reach the small forest village Serrahn from the Zinow hiking parking lot via a forest adventure path. Along natural forest trails and narrow paths, stations with information boards provide insights into the unique vegetation. In a lice corner inside a deadwood trunk, you can perceive the sounds of the forest particularly intensely, and on two hammocks, you can see the forest from a completely different perspective. The path leads through the "primeval forest" of the World Natural Heritage Site with its giant trees, the special aesthetics of standing and fallen dead trees, and the young beeches reaching for the light. From the observation tower at the Great Serrahn Lake, you can, with a bit of luck, observe cranes in the tall reeds as well as sea and fish eagles. A wooden boardwalk leads through an intact moor to the small village of Serrahn. Here, the exhibition "In the Realm of the Beeches" presents many interesting facts and small secrets that aren't immediately visible outdoors. A second exhibition shows nature photos from the Müritz National Park. During the season, a small garden café invites you to rest before the path returns to the Zinow parking lot.
