— An Extremely Rewarding Circular Hike! First, we reach the Lunghin Pass, a remarkable watershed in the Alps: The Inn flows eastward into the Black Sea; the Maira flows southward, carrying its waters via the Po into the Adriatic Sea; and finally, the Gelgia flows westward, eventually joining the Rhine and emptying into the North Sea. From the watershed, we hike to the Septimer Pass and descend to Casaccia along ancient Roman roads.
From Cadlägh, a strenuous hike up the sweeping, steep slope, with a beautiful view of Lake Sils and the surrounding mountains. The trail levels off, and we reach the broad basin that cradles the picturesque Lake Lunghin (Lägh dal Lunghin), 2,484 m. You hike almost flat through this basin and then ascend to the Lunghin Pass, 2,645 m. Here, the view suddenly opens up to the west, revealing numerous beautifully shaped peaks of the Albula Alps and far beyond. Our trail now leads us across an undulating plateau to the Septimer Pass, 2,310 m. This pass was already an important crossing point in Roman times. Following in their footsteps, we descend along an easy trail. It only becomes steep next to a gorge, near Cranch da Sett, and then we reach the valley floor of the Maira. We descend along a small alpine road that takes us to Alpe Maroz Dora (1,799 m) on the opposite bank, and finally follow a footpath down to Casaccia (1,458 m). Return to the starting point by post bus.
