Along a beautiful, rocky path, it goes on cliffs to Duino Castle, where Rilke worked on his elegies for ten years and immortalized the wonderful landscape around.

The Sentiero Rilke (Rilkeweg) runs nearly two kilometers along stunning cliffs above the blue Adriatic. On very pleasant, sometimes rocky and sometimes well-trodden ground, low forest alternates with great views. Along the way, some former military tunnels are also passed, which form a crazy contrast to the Mediterranean idyll. The goal of the short hike is Duino Castle with its famous staircase and magnificent gardens, as well as the old castle ruins of Duino on another cliff somewhat lower below. The entrance is well worth it (visit the castle first, there are combination tickets here)! Afterwards, after a possible stopover in Duino, the return path can be taken, on which there is also a restaurant belonging to the neighboring campsite shortly before the end that invites you to stop.

    Author’s recommendation

While here in midsummer it is probably too hot and crowded, the hike is perfect for autumn or spring. At the end of April, you can even find wild asparagus along the way!

    Safety information

The path is largely well secured and far enough away from the cliffs. Nevertheless, you should be careful when climbing on viewing rocks, especially with children.

    Roadbook

From an infopoint that points out the Rilkeweg, the Alpe-Adria-Trail running parallel here, as well as the region's World War history, you start off by clearly following a path to the right. First, the flat, wide path leads past cliffs and a campsite, then the ground becomes rockier and wilder. Now forest alternates with great views. A few weak paths branch off to the right, but the main path is clear. Shortly before Duino, the path meets a wider gravel road, which we follow to the left. The castle is already within reach, but we have to go down a flight of stairs and to the right onto the main street of the town to avoid private property. After about 100 meters, a gate to our left marks the entrance to the castle. Coming out of the castle gate, we must follow the sloping street to the left towards the castle ruins. We ignore the junction 10 meters beside the gate and take the next junction about 150 meters later. The road becomes a path leading to the ruins.

    Return on the same way.
