beautiful route along the hills overlooking the Val d' Elsa. We start from Barberino descending through the olive groves to the Agliena stream where a nice path has been set up that allows us to admire the "Leonardo's locks". These are masonry dams on the stream, built in the Middle Ages to ensure water reserves. The great Leonardo da Vinci conducted studies here on the movements of water.
We leave the small road to climb the steep hill up to the village of Petrognano, then head to the chapel of San Michele a Semifonte. The building was constructed at the end of the 16th century in memory of the city destroyed and razed to the ground in the early 1200s by the Florentines. From here the route descends into the woods to a beautiful building with a medieval tower, then descends again through uncultivated fields and climbs back up to the village of Pastine. Unfortunately, when we passed by, a hunt was taking place and once we reached the tower, we had to turn back along the paved road and reach Pastine from there. Another up and down then takes us to the beautiful parish church of Sant' Appiano, after which we reach San Filippo and finally return to Barberino Val d' Elsa.
