Touristinformation Wertach
The Sebaldweg was established in memory of the writer W. G. Sebald. A native of Wertach, he was a prominent German writer of the postwar era, and many of his works gained international recognition. Six steles featuring excerpts from Sebald’s book *Schwindel.Gefühle.* have been erected along the Sebald Trail. They provide insight into the author’s work and the original settings of his stories.
The starting point of the hike is at an elevation of about 1,200 meters in Oberjoch, on the German-Austrian border. The trail leads downhill through the picturesque Alpsteigtobel gorge, where the first two steles are located. The third stele stands near the artfully renovated Krummenbach Chapel. The Sebald Trail continues on to Unterjoch and from there along the Wertach River to Alpe Sorg 1, where we can stop for a break during the summer months. Here we’ll also find the fourth stele. Nearby are the Alpenhotel Pfeiffermühle and Alpe Sorg 2, where we can also stop for a break. Passing through the village of Jungholz, the trail continues to the stele at “Engen Plätt” and from there to Wertach, where the last stele is located at the Starzlach Bridge. The Sebaldweg ends at the author’s birthplace in the village (Grüntenseestraße 3).
