Our hike leads to a picturesque mountain lake in the southeast of Bad Hindelang and into the rugged rocky world of the Rauhhorn.

On this relatively demanding hike, we start at the southern end of Hinterstein. This hidden alpine village has preserved its original character over the centuries.

We continue south and up to the Schrecksee. This picturesque lake is the only alpine lake with a real island. Its water is icy cold all year round – perhaps this is where the name comes from. In this unsurpassed idyll, we can recover from the rather steep ascent – but: the effort is worth it!

Now we cross the border to Tyrol and enter the "Vilsalpsee" nature reserve in the Tannheimer Valley. This valley is one of Austria's most popular holiday destinations in both summer and winter, due not least to the natural splendor and beauty of its nature.

After circumnavigating the threateningly rising Rauhhorn above us, we head back to Hinterstein.

    Author’s recommendation

Anyone who wants can also cross the Rauhhorn. However, it should be noted that this route passes by partly exposed sections and is secured with steel cables in two places. Several sections of difficulty grade I according to the UIAA scale. A head for heights and surefootedness are absolutely necessary. It is also possible to walk back to Hinterstein from the Schrecksee on the path we came, which shortens the route and allows more time to enjoy the Schrecksee.

From the parking lot located south of Hinterstein, we set off towards Hinterbachhof. From here we follow the path further over the Konstanzer Jägerhaus to the power plant.

Up to here, we can also take the private bus line that leads to the Giebelhaus, saving time and effort. Because now it goes straight and steep – almost 1000 meters of elevation – uphill to the Schrecksee.

Despite the scenic beauty, we do not take a long break, as we still have further – albeit smaller – climbs ahead of us. So we continue to the "Hintere Schafwanne", where we cross the border into Tyrol. With a view of the Tannheimer Valley extending to our right side, we pass the east side of the Rauhhorn.

We now reach the "Vordere Schafwanne", where we return to Germany and head towards the Willers-Alpe. There we rest with a wonderful view. Noteworthy: the alp is supplied only by horses and not via a material cableway. Over the Wildfräuleinstein, we return to our starting point.
