With its steep, forested slopes, the highest peak in the Vienna Woods rises above the headwaters of the Schwechat and Tulln rivers. The Figl Observatory, which is not open to the public, is located on the Mitterschöpfl, set apart from the main summit. Unfortunately, getting there and back is somewhat difficult and requires careful planning.
Part of the northern branch of the Wienerwald Long-Distance Hiking Trail 404 between Grinzing and Kreisbach involves the ascent of the Schöpfl from Laaben. Its red-white-red trail markers lead us from Laaben across meadows and sparsely vegetated slopes, climbing steadily up the northern flank of the Schöpfl. Above the forest lodge, the shortest ascent joins our trail. The trail climbs ever more steeply along a path on the forest slope and finally reaches the ridge at Hinterschöpfl. From there, it’s just a few minutes along the supply trail to the new Schöpfl shelter; that’s where Variant 2 begins. A little higher up, at the main summit of the Schöpfl, stands the iron Franz-Eduard-Matras lookout tower, which on clear days offers a panoramic view stretching from the Kalkhochalpen to the Waldviertel.
