Schnackenburg - Gartow

Schnackenburg – Gartow (15 km) After visiting the Borderland Museum in Schnackenburg, we’ll hike along the Border and Nature Trail (on the dike), passing four information panels on our way to the Stresow Memorial and Visitor Center. After touring the site, we walk back 50 meters and turn left onto the former patrol path toward Bömenzien. Once we reach the state highway, our route takes us left past the former Kapern–Bömenzien border crossing to the village of Bömenzien. In the center of the village, we’ll turn right to continue on the former military patrol path, passing a border watchtower and information panels, until we reach the village of Nienwalde. (About 500 m before reaching the village, you can walk along the dike and enjoy the beautiful natural surroundings.) Continue straight ahead, past the Eichenkrug restaurant, until you reach the end of the village. Turn right onto Tannenweg and continue straight ahead to Eichenallee. Here, turn left and follow the pedestrian and bike path to the state road until you reach the outskirts of Gartow. The path on the right takes us past Gartow Castle. It’s worth a visit. After a leisurely walk through the town, keep left at the intersection to reach the spa administration office. Source: Elbtalaue-Wendland brochure
