In front of the mountains, which appear as a striking wall, the Ostallgäu is characterized by a gently undulating hilly landscape, in which picturesque lake pearls delight the eye and mind time and again. Here, you can set off on any number of leisurely hikes or tranquil walks. A rather short tour in the context of this guide leads to the Schmutterweiher, which is ideal as a warm paddling pool in summer. A variety of interesting plants thrive in the wet meadow surroundings.
Around 250 meters east of the parking lot, we take the signposted path towards Tiefenbruck/Schmutterweiher, come across the access road to Tiefenbruck at a small pond and soon pass the Höfeweiler. Mostly through open meadows with individual rains, we head north via Gurrenmarren to Nepfen. A quarter of an hour later we reach the Schmutterweiher pond, 785 m, and follow the shore to the vicinity of a kiosk. Cross the nearby parking lot a little to the north, then take a sharp left onto the little road to Egelmoosen, 810 m, situated on a small hill. We choose the route on the right and can later decide to visit the Huttlerweiher pond, 799 m, within 10 minutes. Although this is privately owned and fenced in (so no swimming), it still offers a beautiful view at the Huttler mill. Back at the fork, we follow the former "Via Claudia Augusta" - now an ordinary dirt track - past a nice rest area. We complete the loop in a southerly direction over typical, gentle meadow undulations, meet the road

Mark Zahel
