The Schmittental valley drains the wide-ranging cirque of the Schmittenhöhe to the east towards Lake Zell. As a result, enormous amounts of gravel material were pushed through the two-kilometer-long valley towards the lake. Zell am See developed on the debris cone created in this way - similar to other towns in the region. The main reason for this was the elevated location, which offered protection and favored settlement activity, in contrast to the mostly waterlogged, boggy or swampy subsoil of the valley floor.
Diagonally opposite the forecourt of the Ferry Porsche Congress Center in Zell am See, Mozartstraße leads in the direction of Schmittenhöhe. Follow this road to the far end. Turn left here, past the Hotel Berner, uphill to the crossroads. Now do not continue left to the underpass, but turn right (marked Köhlergrabenweg). Continue below the cityXpress lift until the path turns west. The path now continues along the southern side of the Schmittental valley, past the so-called Stefanibrunnen fountain, until you reach a fork in the path. Here, a path on the left leads to the Ebenbergalm snack station, and you can descend to the right to the Sonnberg bus stop. However, we continue straight ahead and reach the former Waldgasthof Köhlergraben, still heading west. From here, you have the option of keeping right and descending to the valley stations of the lifts. However, the path in a north-westerly direction, under the Schmittenhöhe cable car to Hinterfalleck, is more beautiful. We now take
