The tour to the Scheffauer, considered the first Kaiser peak to be ascended by tourists (probably in 1794), can be well integrated into a multi-day mountain program around the Kaindlhütte. When using the Kaiser lift, however, it is usually done as a day trip. The route over the demanding Widauersteig is especially recommended during the hot summer months due to its shady location.
From the top station of the Kaiser lift at Jahnhügel, we hike on a small road over the Brentenjochalm to the nearby Brentenjoch and then a longer piece to a footbridge over the Gaisbachgraben down. Here the actual ascent begins. The path leads to the Steinberghütte and to the right over alpine pastures to the Kaindlhütte. Towards the Scheffauer, we go to the nearby Steinberg chapel and further to a junction where we leave the forest road in the direction of the "Widauersteig". A clear path (814) leads over mountain pastures and through the forest to the Hirschlacke, then over open, often quite smooth slopes to the scree field of the Großer Friedhof. We cross this to the left to the entry of the Widauersteig. A brittle gully is followed by vertical, slabby rock secured with iron rungs and rope. After about 100 m, behind a rock overlap, a ledge with an interruption leads right into the middle of a well 200 m high, brittle rock gorge that requires careful walking. The trail, secured
