Several difficult-to-reach rocky summits surround the popular Blaueis Hut. Thanks to fixed cables, only experienced hikers can reach the Schärtenspitze. From the top, a majestic view opens up onto Hochkalter, Watzmann, and the Reiteralpe. Above the Blaueis Hut lies the northernmost glacier in the Alps. In the past, the Blaueis Glacier covered 25 ha, but climate change has hit here with full force. Today, the glacier has shrunk significantly; the glacier tongue has detached from the glacier, and both areas now measure only 4.2 ha (2023).
In Ramsau, 670 m, we follow the road from the Oberwirt for 200 m towards the church, then keep right and cross the Ramsauer Ache on a bridge. Here we keep right again and follow the hiking trail along the creek to the Pfeiffenmacherbrücke parking lot, 680 m. From the forestry road starting at the parking lot, we ascend towards the Blaueis Hut up to a junction, 790 m. We take the right, initially still broad path through dense forest on the northern slopes of the Steinberg. Soon the Shady Side Path crosses our path. We continue until the path narrows to a trail. This leads us in tight switchbacks to the main ascent to the Blaueis Hut from Hintersee. We follow it to the left and after a few switchbacks reach the Schärtenalm, managed in summer, at 1362 m. We continue on the road above the alm. After a short descent, the path goes around a rocky corner ("Blaueis Bench"), 1385 m, and along a wide hanging bridge at a rock face into the lower Blaueiskar.
