A unique landscape: One day 14.3 million years ago, the impact of a double asteroid devastated southern Germany in ancient times. Today an attraction for tourists are the Nördlinger Ries and Steinheim Basin, the best-preserved large craters on Earth. The Nördlinger Ries, a flat, circular depression about 24 kilometers in diameter – the so-called Ries basin – forms the border between the Franconian Alb in the east and the Swabian Alb in the west. Most of the Ries lies in Bavaria, a bit, as the Swabians say, belongs to Baden-Württemberg. The debris from the cosmic direct hit flew much further. Immediately after the Ries asteroid impact, because of evaporation and melting of the upper earth layers, small melt fragments were ejected in a high-speed jet up to 450 kilometers away into Bohemia, Moravia, and Lusatia. We do not intend to hike that far today.
