Let's head up to our local mountain, the Gernkogel! Obergassalm is certainly the most beautiful and rustic alpine pasture on this mountain. Cows graze all around, and the dairy farmer’s wife spoils her guests with homemade bread and cheese. The dairy farmer now entertains the guests.
We start from the Hotel Alpendorf and walk along the Panorama Trail towards Sternhof. Here you have 2 options: either the steep path past Sternhof or the forest road left before Sternhof. You can take your first break at Kreistenalm with a wonderful panorama (Note: closed on Mondays). Then continue through the forest to Obergassalm. Here you have a fantastic view over the Salzach valley up to the Kitzsteinhorn. 5 minutes on foot from Obergassalm is the mountain station of the Alpendorf cable cars. If your calves are already tired or the schnapps was too good, you can take the gondola down to the valley :-). Have fun!
Author’s recommendation
After Kreistenalm, you can also take the "Kniebeisser" path. It is very steep but you will reach your destination faster :-).
At Obergassalm, bread and "Sauerkas" are homemade. Highly recommended!!!

Roadbook
The start is at the Hotel Alpendorf, then turn left towards Hotel Alpenhof, past the stable, and then right into the forest. After about 15 minutes of walking, you will reach a short section on the asphalt road. Before Sternhof, turn left onto the forest road to Kreistenalm. You can also take the steeper path. Just pass Sternhof and enter the forest. At Kreistenalm, continue through the forest to Obergassalm. The path is very well signposted.
On the descent, the first section to Kreistenalm is the same as the ascent. Behind Kreistenalm, take the Dachmannweg down to Alpendorf.

Via the A 10, the Tauern motorway, Bischofshofen junction, exit Sankt Johann, then on the B 311, the Pinzgauer federal road approximately 5 kilometers, exit Alpendorf St. Johann-South – about 3 km, turn left towards Alpendorf, the 4th hotel on the left side.Parking
