The trailhead is located at the top of the town of Serres. Follow the sign marked “14th-Century Jewish Tomb”; the trail is marked with yellow blazes.
The trail winds upward, passes behind a pointed rock, enters the forest at the Jewish tomb, and then climbs a bit further to reach the ridges. From here on, the hardest part is over: there are no more steep climbs; the trail winds along the ridges for quite a while.
Then there’s a short descent through the woods; at a poorly marked fork, continue on the right-hand trail, which climbs back up to the ridges: you’ll then cross over to the northern slope of
, before descending to the Col de Saumane (1,031 m, 3 km from Serres).
Take the trail on the left; immediately to the left of this trail, a red-and-white-marked path leads into the forest: this path allows you to cut across a few bends in the trail, then crosses through fields.
When you reach the farm at the bottom of the valley, follow the gravel road—which passes in front of the small chapel of Notre Dame de Saumane—all the way to Serres. The trail remains marked in red and white, and don’t be surprised: you’ll indeed have to cross the schoolyard!
Author’s recommendation
Due to its southern exposure, rocky terrain, and sparse vegetation, we recommend taking this hike in the late afternoon; for example, by combining a visit to Old Serres, the hike, and then refreshments at one of the downtown terraces.Serres, designated a “village of character,” is a charming old town worth visiting: it features numerous historical sites, some of which—such as the Bonsecours Chapel and the Jewish tomb—are located along the Col de Saumane trail. A map of the village, featuring historical information, is available free of charge at the Tourist Office.
