Santorini Trail 13 - Akrotiri - Vlichada beach
This route takes hikers from the settlement of Akrotiri to the impressive Vlichada beach through vine fields and dirt roads.
This route starts near the settlement of Akrotiri, at the parking lot located at its entrance. From there a succession of dirt roads leads the hiker among vines and abandoned fields giving a strong image of the agricultural landscape in this seemingly inhospitable place for human activities. Here the hiker will get a good taste of how this place nourished its inhabitants with its special characteristics. The succession of uphill and downhill dirt roads leads the hiker past the chapel of Agia Anna, towards the southern coast and the impressive beach of Vlychada. Here the trail that is printed on official maps leads the hiker through a construction site and down a wide dirt road which will lead to the beach via a non-existent line that can be traced in dense vegetation and steep hills. The construction site workers might have destroyed a formerly existing path, but now the proposed route is almost impossible. Instead, in order to approach the beach, it is recommended to enter the dirt road which eventually leads the hiker to the beach from a higher position. Arriving at the impressive beach of Vlychada, the hiker will feel awe under the height of the imposing geological formations of this special material that is sculpted day by day by water and wind. 1 kilometer of hiking along this impressive coastline leads to the end of the route, next to the asphalt road that reaches here, on the coast of Vlychada. The route has minimal signposting and its layout is in urgent need of improvement.
