The Salse are emissions of cold mud, produced by the rising water of marine origin, mixed with hydrocarbons, mainly gaseous (methane) and, to a small extent, liquid (oil), which, coming to the surface, through faults and fractures in the ground dissolve the clay of the soil giving rise to the typical cone or pool formations.

    (See additional information for reference).

    Author’s recommendation

The idea is to visit this place in the evening before dinner when it's not too hot and then stop to eat nearby (pay attention to closing times). The Salse are always open, and the museum is also interesting but has limited opening hours (see the website).

    Directions

At the Modena Nord exit from the A1 highway, take (always turning right) the Modena - Sassuolo ring road until the end (exit 31). At the roundabout where it ends, turn left towards Spezzano-Maranello, then at the third junction take the right onto via del Canaletto and then straight ahead onto via del Mulino and via Nirano up to Torre delle Oche. At Torre delle Oche you turn right onto Via Rio Salse which, after crossing the watercourse, leads to the Reserve. Special tourist signs (with a brown background) indicate the protected area both in Spezzano and at the Torre delle Oche crossroads.
