The easy-to-walk route running through the extensive Säynäjäsuo-Matalasuo mire protection area along boardwalks over mires and pine heaths is Kainuu's most significant open mire area for birdlife, whose mire landscapes are particularly open and magnificent by Kainuu standards. Many rare birds of mires, waters, and wilderness visit and breed in the area. Additionally, in autumn, berry pickers can enjoy the harvest from Säynäjäsuo. The route passes through extensive aapa mires and lush spruce swamps onto the pine heaths of Syväjärvi ridges. Near the middle of the route, at the Syväjärvi laavu, you can rest while watching the lake's waves. Due to the resting place and slight elevation changes, the route is very suitable as a day trip for almost the whole family.

The wet areas of Säynäjäsuo-Matalasuo have boardwalks, but during rainy weather and spring thaw, rubber boots or good hiking shoes are necessary.

Säynäjäsuo is located 13 kilometers from the center of Suomussalmi. Drive south on Highway 5 for about 6 km and turn left onto Moisiovaara Road, which you drive for about 8 km.
