The Säuleck, famous for its extensive view, is one of the easily accessible three-thousanders in the Hohe Tauern and is therefore very popular. Contributing to this is the cozy Arthur-v.-Schmid-Haus halfway to the summit, a welcome overnight stay for most summit climbers. The hut has a magnificent location on the shore of the Dösener See, whose crystal-clear water, despite its coldness, tempts many mountaineers to a refreshing bath – at least for the big toe. At the lake, the jumble of boulders in the surrounding mountain slopes catches our eye, a characteristic of the Hochalm group, where several block glaciers are located; one of the largest extends from the Mallnitzer Scharte to the eastern shore of the Dösener See. Block glaciers are typical permafrost phenomena. Water or snow freezes on and under rock blocks into ice, filling the gaps between the blocks, pushing them apart – the block debris starts creeping downhill. The lower layer consists of ice-rich fine material, the upper layer of often house-high blocks. The glacier's movement and the huge blocks make a trail through the center of the glacier impossible, meaning for the mountaineer an exciting but arduous balancing act over the rocks.
Day 2: To the Säuleck we go from the hut northward and up a steep grassy and scree slope to the high plateau of the Seealm, 2429 m. High above the deep blue lake we hike over glacier-polished slabs, scree, and grassy slopes, slowly ascending in a northeasterly direction, climb over a massive block debris, and reach a notch, 2762 m (trail junction to the Mallnitzer Scharte). Here the path turns again north, ascending a small protective valley to the south ridge and climbing over coarse blocks to the highest point. First, we return on our ascent path to the notch and continue straight towards the Mallnitzer Scharte. Red markers guide us through a huge block debris; on trail traces, we then descend somewhat easier to the house-high rocks of the block glacier, where the markings end. We climb up to a clearly visible yellow signpost, 2605 m, marking the trail junction Mallnitzer Scharte – Arthur-v.-Schmid-Haus, and follow the indicated direction straight downhill over the massive rock
