To the literal "peak" in the Alpstein massif

The Säntis hardly needs much promotion. Hardly any mountain in northeastern Switzerland is more popular, more omnipresent, and sees more people on its summit… Most come comfortably by cable car from Schwägalp. The routes on the Säntis are legion and are usually very interesting for climbers, especially scenic. Here, we naturally focus on the Toggenburg approach, where a wonderful high valley already opens up at the starting point Laui. In the background, the Säntis with its unmistakable antenna spike stands like a promise! After reaching the Rotsteinpass within three hours, the highlight of the tour awaits with the Lisengrat starting there. The rock path was already developed over 100 years ago. The literal peak, of course, is the panoramic view from the summit, which no longer consists of natural rock but concrete. No matter – we knew that in advance. At least during the descent, the hustle gradually subsides, and you immerse yourself back into naturalness. The somewhat rough route via Tierwis still offers some surprising impressions. Conclusion: a great tour on a mountain that is an alpine symbol of an entire region, and certainly a highlight in this guide…

From the Laui parking lot, 1072 m, on the paved alpine road towards Alpli, gradually ascending into the valley end, where just before Thurwis at point 1201 you keep right. The next stage is Langenbüel, 1472 m, with the junction of our two routes. We continue through the terrain cut and make a number of switchbacks up to Flis-Schafboden, 1729 m. There is a simple inn at the Karschwelle. On the left slope at point 1864, a possible direct route branches off to Chalbersäntis (steep and on-site with unrealistically short time estimate). It is more worthwhile to hike the entire Lisengrat from Rotsteinpass. Thus, we stay on the main path and follow it over stony ground up to Rotsteinpass, 2119 m, frequently also ascended from the Appenzell north side. The Lisengrat starts with an easy trail but soon features secured traverses and becomes significantly steeper towards point 2310. With many steps and widely renewed wire ropes, the route is perfectly developed. Behind the summit, a short steep

Profile picture of Mark Zahel Author Mark Zahel
