If, for whatever reason, you don't dare to climb Gerlach, Vysoká, Ľadový štít or Baranie rohy, then Rysy is the only really high mountain in the High Tatras where even "normal" hikers can experience a real mountaineering feeling. What's more, Rysy lies directly on the border between Slovakia and Poland. And there is a little extra on top: if you climb the Rysy from the Slovakian side, you will come across the only real high mountain hut in the Tatras, the Chata pod Rysmi (2250 m), which is open at least in the main season. It is located an hour below the summit and is served by porters from Popradské pleso. It is notorious for its outside dry toilet, which you have to scramble two minutes from the hut over the moraine to visit.
From the Popradské Pleso mountain hotel, first ascend briefly to the main signpost. Turn right here (north-northwest), always following the blue markings, on a good path, first in the forest, later through mountain pines. After the wooden bridge over the Žabí potok stream, we reach the fork Nad Žabím potokom. Turn right here, following the red markings, steeply up over the Wachterka high valley step (named after the Hungarian climber Jenő Wachter, who died while abseiling in 1907). In 1 hour we reach the high valley Kotlina Žabích plies from the junction. Pass the Veľké Žabie pleso (Big Frog Lake - note the shape of the small rocky island!), then turn right up another terrace (belay) to the Dolinka pod Váhou high basin. From the Chata pod Rysmi hut it is another 15 minutes to the Váha saddle at 2337 m, where beautiful views of Kôpky, Vysoká, Ťažký štít and the high valley Ťažká dolina with the famous Ganek Gallery await you.
