All of the natural attractions on this loop share the element of water: the dimly lit Rottach Gorge, the dammed-up Rottachsee—which is extremely popular with recreational athletes—and the Rukatsbach and Kranzegger Bach waterfalls, which are quite a surprise here in the Alpine foothills.
From the bus stop at the church in Vorderburg, we follow the sidewalk to the hamlet of Großdorf and, once there, take Amthausstraße toward Rottachsee. Once we reach the end of the village, we continue on the county road. Keeping an eye on traffic, we make our way through a varied, rolling landscape. After 10 minutes, we turn onto the farm road marked “Greifenmühle.” Behind a hilltop, the route crosses the Alte Salzstraße. Shortly afterward, the “Riedis” sign points across a pathless meadow. Keeping an eye on the trail markers, we stroll along the edge of the forest for a while, then enter the woods on a path of wood chips, and cross the raging river deep within the Rottach Gorge on the historic Kuhsteg bridge (800 m). Steeply and partly without a defined trail, we climb up to Riedis, 856 m.On a flat road, initially heading toward Moosbach, we walk along the dam at Rottachsee.
