At over 2,000m elevation, we hike past the impressive Rotwand on our route. Dreamlike views and imposing rocks accompany us along the way.
Thanks to the cable car that takes us from Vigo di Fassa to almost 2,000m, the altitude meters we have to overcome on our hike afterwards are manageable. Only from Malga Vael to the Rotwand hut does the path lead steeper upwards. Good fitness is still required on the relatively long route. The paths that bring us closer to the Rotwand are mostly quite narrow but well passable and signposted.
The hike is definitely worth it. We realize this at the latest when the rocky massif of the Rosengarten group rises directly beside us. Green mountain meadows with the occasional colorful flower offer a lively contrast to the gray rock. If you're lucky, you can even spot marmots along the way.

We take the cable car up before turning left and starting our hike. On our right, we pass Rifugio Ciampedie and Rifugio Negritella. At the fork, we turn left, then right, and stay on hiking trail 545.
The terrain is relatively flat until Malga Vael, shortly before which it begins to ascend. At the next opportunity, we stay right on the hiking trail and arrive at Rifugio Roda di Vaèl, the Rotwand hut. This is a good place for a break.
Then we hike along below the imposing Rotwand, continuing to keep right. This path leads us back to the cable car.
