The Rottenweg runs along the young Rhone, which here in Upper Valais and Goms is called Rotten. On the way from Oberwald to Niederwald, you pass through all the Upper Goms villages.
“The road crosses the Rhone twice, which rushes down between rocks, then descends on the right bank in large hairpin bends that pedestrians can shorten, through larch and fir forest to Oberwald, where it reaches the valley floor of Upper Valais.” Baedeker already recommended a trip through the Goms in an edition from 1913. The beautiful views have not changed to this day. Even less so on the Rottenweg: Ahead the Weisshorn, behind the Galenstock, and in the valley the villages line up with old Upper Goms houses and restaurants. Hospitality is also very important in Goms. After all, the hotel pioneer César Ritz comes from the Upper Goms village Niederwald. An important feeder into Goms is the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn. The trains stop in every village, which makes this hike all the more enjoyable: depending on time, desire and mood, you can shorten the hike and board the next train.
