This panoramic mountain in the South Tyrolean lowlands is the highest peak of the Mendel ridge on the border between South Tyrol and Trentino. The hiking mountain slopes steeply towards the east, whereas in the west it resembles - especially in early summer - a flower meadow (Blumenwiesenberg) on which columbine, alpine wood vine, gentian and many other mountain flowers bloom. At the foot of the Roen, on the South Tyrolean side, lies the wine village of Tramin.
The hike begins on the Mendel Pass, namely at the large car park at the "Mezzavia" chairlift. You can take the lift to the halfway hut or walk up the short ski slope in about 20 minutes. On trail no. 521, which leads to the summit, you hike leisurely uphill across alpine meadows to the Roenalm (Malga Roen, 1773 m). South of the hut, at a fork in the trail, continue along trail no. 521, which takes you first through mountain pine forests and later across steep meadow slopes to the summit of the Roen. Return as for the outward route.
