Unione dei Comuni Valli Taro e Ceno
A circular route suitable for trekking, mountain biking, and horseback riding where the rocks are the protagonists.
The "Groppo" of Rocca di Varsi is mainly composed of ophiolites of the serpentinite group, outcrops of magmatic origin rocks, a treasure of the Parma-Piacenza Apennines quite rare at regional level. They can be small or very large in volume and extension and, due to their resistance, have often been chosen as strategic places for territory control. In fact, on the summit of the “Groppo” there are still remains of an ancient fortress (which gave the name to the village Rocca), attributed to the Lombard-Byzantine era.
There is a rare and specialized flora typical of serpentinites, including protected species such as Tulipaaustralis and the very rare Fritillaria tenella. Along the slopes of the rock is hidden a rich population of the very rare Venus' navel (Umbilicus rupestris), a crassulaceae linked to rupicolous environments that here has its second known station in the region. The rocky environment offers shelter conditions for many species typical of Apennine fauna.
