Round trip route: scenic walk along the Rilke Trail connecting Sistiana and Duino.
DATE: 01/01/2026
DEPARTURE: Free parking in front of the Sistiana PromoTurismoFVG Infopoint. There are a few parking spaces, some public toilets and a war memorial. From here the Rilke Trail starts in the direction of Duino. Obsessed with the sunset, we arrived around 4 pm. This allowed us to find parking immediately and enjoy good privacy along the trail.
PATH TYPE: The path is dirt and gravel, wide enough to allow bipeds and quadrupeds smooth two-lane traffic. Its uniqueness lies entirely in its constant views, first of the Gulf of Trieste and then of Duino Castle overlooking the sea. So be careful not to stray too far from the path and lose sight of your doggo. We point out the lack of baskets throughout the trail, a serious fact for a special-status region: we expected at least one near the arrival in Duino... No dice. Amazing how quickly the doggo poop bag becomes an envied fashion accessory.
POINTS OF WATER: absent along the route, so here, too, there is a water bottle requirement even in winter for particularly thirsty doggies and bipeds.
POINTS OF INTEREST: from the start to the finish, the backdrop provides evocative seascapes. A few clouds deprived us of the sunset, but the return to Sistiana with the first darkness allowed us to admire the lights of the coastal towns reflected in the Gulf of Trieste. Magical moment.
CLIMATE: The Rilke Trail is at times exposed to the sun and at times protected by the shade of the pine forest. It seems to be passable at all times of the year. We walked it in January and the weather seemed ideal.
