Near Riegel, the Dreisam, Alte Dreisam, and Elz rivers converge and flow together briefly before the water continues—partly as the Alte Elz and partly via the Leopold Canal—in a straight line toward the Rhine. From St. Michael’s Chapel (an alternative route right at the start of the tour), you can look down onto the waters. Thanks to its manageable length, the hike can easily be combined with another destination. For example, there are museums to visit in both towns. In Riegel, the Roman Museum and the Messmer Art Gallery are worth considering; in Endingen, the Cheese-Making Museum and the Museum of Further Austria. You can also round out the tour in the Erle Valley, where a swimming lake and a mini-golf course await visitors.
At the train station in Riegel, we walk a few meters toward Römerstraße, where we must decide whether to take the rewarding—but briefly tricky—alternative route. The main route first follows Kirchstraße to the Catholic Church of St. Martin, then turns left and, after passing behind City Hall, turns right through the town. At the Wolfsgrube signpost, the alternate route rejoins the main path, and we leave our starting point, Riegel. At the Am Dürleberg junction, we hike uphill on the left through a sunken path. After passing under the power lines, the first beautiful views of the surrounding area open up.We hike the length of the Dürleberg before descending into the valley of the Riedhöfe at the Bettlerküche junction. On the opposite slope, we climb a few meters in elevation and keep a close eye on the yellow diamond, which guides us through the vineyards with a few changes in direction. 20 meters below the Engelsberg Wihlbach signpost, we keep to the left and hike along a gently
