The opening stage of the Vinschger Höhenweg can hardly be described as a "high trail" in the literal sense, as you still move unmistakably within the valley area here, although at an altitude between 1500 and just over 1700 meters. The official starting point is the Etsch spring, half hidden in the forest, near the village of Reschen, barely two kilometers from the Austrian border. Wherever possible, the route clings to the lower slopes, but occasionally it must use the lakeside promenade of Lake Reschen for just under an hour. The church tower of Alt-Graun rising from the water is a symbol of the area and a unique tourist magnet. Just a little way off the Reschen road, there is often astonishing quiet. Hamlets such as Dörfl, Plawenn, or Alsack unfold their typical regional charm, and in Planeil (at the exit of the eponymous side valley), after perhaps the most beautiful section of the tour, you finally settle in. The Malser Haide, the largest alluvial fan in the Alps, shapes the upper Vinschgau as a landscape characteristic. And from the very beginning, the mighty Ortler with its shimmering ice cap greets on the southern horizon.
We start in the town of Reschen on the Waldbodenweg towards the sports field, which is located just above the settlements, and first take the detour to the Etsch spring to visit the official starting point of the Vinschger Höhenweg. For this, we head a short distance north (well signposted). Back at the sports facility, follow a forest trail that crosses above the village and then leads to the farms of Klopair, 1644 m, gaining a few meters in altitude. On the access road, then slightly downhill to the fork of a forest road, turn left with it, shortly uphill and continue on a path in the first hairpin. Gradually, we approach Graun and turn down towards the shore of Lake Reschen at the first houses, where the church tower of the submerged old village has become a highly visited and much-photographed attraction.Continuing south, we are now dependent for nearly four kilometers on the lakeside promenade (bike path), initially somewhat away from the busy traffic on Reschen road, but later,

Mark Zahel
