The Aare Gorge is one of the most popular excursion destinations in the Bernese Oberland. You can combine the walk through the gorge with a hike to the Reichenbachfall. Actually, there are three waterfalls where the Reichenbach rushes down. The most impressive is the upper one, about 120 meters high. The Reichenbachfall became famous in literary history through Arthur Conan Doyle: He relocated the fictional end of his character Sherlock Holmes to Meiringen and had the master detective fall to his death here. With the historic Reichenbachfall Railway, you ascend to the mountain station with the best view of the waterfall and the star-marked site of the (fictional) fight between Holmes and his adversary Moriarty. Along the splashing water, you climb up, cross the fall below Zwirgi, and follow the trail via Geissholz towards Innertkirchen to the east entrance of the Aare Gorge.
