Between Wenningstedt and Kampen stretches the Red Cliff, which rises up to 30 meters above the beach and lives up to its name especially in the evening light. This hike goes from Wenningstedt above the cliff to Kampen, where you have a stunning view over the western beach of Sylt at any time. This is topped in Kampen by the view from the Uwe Düne (at 52 meters the highest elevation on Sylt). Here, in good weather, you can see the northern and eastern tip of Sylt and identify the other island resorts by their lighthouses and church towers. The wooden stairs can be slippery in winter.
The hiking trail on the Red Cliff between Kampen and Wenningstedt is one of the few natural trails on Sylt. Please stay on the path and do not enter the adjacent dunes.
Roadbook
We start at the parking lot on Berthin-Bleeg-Straße and climb the steps to the beach access. At the spa card hut, we turn right onto the wooden path, which leads over several stairs through the dunes. Halfway north the wooden path ends, and we continue hiking on sand above the cliff. We follow the cliff path to the end and turn right onto the wooden staircase. This leads directly to the Uwe Düne, which we climb. Then we continue north and follow the Red Cliff hiking trail to the Sturmhaube. From there, we switch to the beach and head south again. We walk along the beach until we reach the wide beach staircase (with a slide) at the Wenningstedt promenade. From here, we walk past the Haus am Kliff, along Dünenstraße back to the starting point.
