Reaching high on the Oderlandweg
TMB Tourismus-Marketing Brandenburg GmbH
Even Theodor Fontane raved about the distant view stretching from the hills of Bad Freienwalde far into the Oderbruch. He gave Brandenburg's oldest spa town the nickname “mountain town.” Everything it is, it owes to the foothills of the Barnim, especially its springs, which a pharmacist already certified as healing in the 17th century. The charming first stage of the Oderlandweg, where you ascend from Wriezen, the “capital of the Oderbruch,” past Altranft to the Barnim plateau around Bad Freienwalde and Falkenberg/Mark, could hardly be more varied in landscape.
The Oderbruch Museum Altranft takes you on a journey into the rural culture and life of the Oderbruch inhabitants. Bad Freienwalde, "a pretty word for a pretty place" (Fontane), definitely deserves a short detour into the town. The castle and spa park invite you to a cozy rest. And even alpine climbers will be amazed by Germany's northernmost ski jumping hill.

The hiking route begins at the parking lot at Stadtsee in Wriezen at the northern edge of town. If you arrive by train, walk from the station first towards the market, turn left into Friedrich-Fröbel-Straße, right into Gartenstraße, and again left into Schützenstraße. Sonnenburger Weg leads past the Wriezen hospital. You follow the footpath straight ahead to the end and then turn left into Freienwalder Straße, which takes you to the parking lot at Stadtsee, the starting point of the route.
Heading towards Altranft, the route first runs a short stretch along B167. Before Rathsdorf, the Stork Tower, a chimney of a former brickworks, stands out. The path follows the railway line to Altranft, where you cross the tracks. The detour through the village leads to the Brandenburg Open-Air Museum in the former castle park. At the village exit, there is a geological trail.
In Bad Freienwalde, the Oderlandweg now follows the route of the Tower Hiking Trail. The path winds through the Freienwalde forest in several hairpin bends before reaching the chapel. Several more hairpins follow, with many ups and downs. Suddenly, you encounter an impressive ski jumping hill complex.
A path leads to B158. After crossing it, you pass the Owl Tower. Numerous bends on the Barnim ridge and continuous ups and downs follow to Falkenberg. From Teufelsee, the route follows the Theodor Fontane Trail over the wooded hill chain. At the beginning of the ridge path, you can detour to the Bismarck Tower and enjoy the wonderful view. In Falkenberg, the hiking route joins the "Fontaneweg." At the town entrance, the poet is not far either, greeting goodbye from his statue base on the square named after him.
