The Punta Velaco, together with the promontory, forms the central bulwark of the southern Bavella group. The ascent leads through a steep couloir, which makes the hiker sweat a bit after the comfortable access path. The summit itself then requires some scrambling and a sure head. It offers magnificent views of the east coast between Porto-Vecchio and Aléria as well as the rock towers of the northern group and Monte Incudine.
We follow from the information hut at the pass summit the track (barrier at the end of the parking lot), which runs roughly level along the slope, with views of the Bavella towers and over the Alta Rocca to the west coast. After 20 minutes the track turns left (nice viewpoint) and 5 minutes later sharply left again – here we continue straight on the forest road, which we also follow at the next fork (left, not straight ahead). It crosses a ridge and then gently descends to Bocca di Velaco, where our path merges with the hiking trail to Trou de la Bombe. We leave this path after 25 m and turn right onto the path marked with cairns, which runs slightly uphill roughly parallel to the red marked hiking trail. After a few minutes the path forks – here we turn right onto the path marked with stone signs, which leads into a couloir framed by massive rock walls.
