Off the beaten paths, we get to know the wildly romantic Vallone dei Duc. The stone pine forest is replaced by magnificent alpine flora. Alpine roses, lingonberries, blueberries, yellow and red lichens make the wild realm of rocks shine. From the high plateaus, where pack animals and Merens horses spend their summer, there are fantastic views of the mountain ridges. The transition to Passo San Chiaffredo and the detour to Punta Malta offer quite challenging highlights due to steep scree slopes but grant magnificent views – especially of Monviso.
At Lago Bagnour, just below Rifugio Bagnour, we find the red-white marking on the southeast shore, which leads us left through a wooded ravine northeastwards into the Vallone dei Duc. With every meter in altitude, the valley widens, the gnarled stone pine forest becomes sparser, and stones take over. After a boulder field plateau, the path goes steeply up a slope to the left, then traverses eastwards under the rock teeth of Costa’Ale Lunghe into the valley floor of Vallone dei Duc, 2662 m. There we encounter a trail junction where we turn left towards the north to climb the Passo Calatà, 2940 m, through steep scree slopes. From the broad pass ridge, the summit of Punta Malta, 2995 m, can be reached in 15 minutes to the left. The descent to Passo San Chiaffredo, 2764 m, goes northwards through a steep scree slope. Here you meet the quite busy hiking area of the »Giro del Viso« in midsummer. We follow the route westwards through Valle delle Giargiatte to the trail junction of Pian Meyer,
