Pudelstein Loop
The hike starts at the Traube/Tanne bus stop. If you’re arriving by car, we recommend using the Keckenteich parking lot as your starting point (the trailhead for the loop hike is accessible via the Säggraben and Bei den Tennisplätzen locations). From the Traube/Tonbach starting point, walk downhill first to the “An den Tennisplätzen” location. Once you reach the Tonbach stream, the loop now leads through the lovely Wiesental valley toward the Liegewiese and on to the “Am Brunnenweg” location. Here, cross the stream toward the Klappermisshütte. After a short climb, follow the signs at the Klappermisshütte toward Pudelstein. Take some time at Pudelstein to explore this special place. On the information board, you’ll find, among other things, excerpts from regional legends that revolve around this massive boulder. The wide forest trail takes you on to the Pudelsteinhütte. Here, follow a few steps downhill until you reach the Tonbach again at “An der Furt.” Following the stream, you’ll reach the D. Finkbeiner Hütte. Now the trail leads uphill for a few hundred meters to the forester’s lodge. On the wide, paved road, you’ll return to the starting point of your short hike.
Author’s recommendation
The Pudelstein is a massive boulder of Bund sandstone that broke away from the Karwand of the Steinmüssekar at the end of the last Ice Age, approximately 12,000 years ago, and slid down the glacier tongue all the way here into the valley. Many legends and myths surround this impressive natural monument. You can learn more right on site thanks to the informative interpretive signs along the “Wilder Wald im Wandel” nature trail.
