The Megalopotamos River carries water year-round. It flows into the sea at Preveli Beach and forms a freshwater lagoon there. There is also a forest of date palms that extends along the lagoon into the gorge that the Megalopotamos has carved into the rock. These are obviously perfect starting conditions... but tourism has long since discovered this gem. The beach and lagoon are almost always crowded... Nevertheless, the hike along the Preveli gorge is worthwhile. The route does not go through the gorge itself but along the steep edges above it. There you have repeated beautiful views into the gorge, the lagoon, and the beach, especially on the outbound route. Once you reach the beach parking lot, you mix with the many tourists. After visiting the beach, lagoon, and palm forest, the ascent begins on the eastern edge of the beach. You do not cross to the next bay but continue uphill. Now begins a somewhat adventurous section requiring orientation in the terrain to return to the starting point. Orientation: still relatively unproblematic on the outbound, very difficult on the return. Ability to navigate off-trail terrain required (map/GPS urgently needed). Path types: 60% path/off-trail, 30% trail, rest: road. Refreshments available at Γέφυρα (beach tavern).

No objective hazards. Navigation on the eastern part of the route is difficult. Therefore classified as SAC: T3Tips and suggestions
Those who do the route in reverse have the challenging part regarding orientation at the beginning, which is advantageous especially with short daylight hours.Roadbook
On the outbound route (west side), navigation is easy if you follow the trail and the donkey path. Near the beach parking lot, you would have to access the fenced parking lot to continue hiking. Since this is not possible, you go around the parking lot to the south off-trail. Orientation becomes difficult on the return: here cairns/rare red dots help. You need a map or GPS here. You go up the slope at the eastern end of the beach to a transmission mast as a waypoint. Then continue uphill to a field until you reach a worn path. From there, downhill. The next waypoint is 2 distinctive rocks. Continue downhill to the end of the gorge and cross a small dried-up stream bed. Now uphill towards the road. In this area, it is difficult to find the right path because many dead-end goat paths intersect. Be cautious of descents towards the gorge.
