Hike up a mountainside at a bend in the Aurlandsfjord

This trail, located a short distance from Stegastein Viewpoint, has to provide one of the most impressive fjord views in Norway. The viewpoint at the end of the trail sits at a bend in the fjord from where you can see back towards Aurlandsvangen and Flam, as well as further down the fjord towards Undredal and the entrance to the Nærøyfjord. From here, it’s easy to understand why the Nærøyfjord and the surrounding landscape is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Note that this hike doesn’t lead to the actual summit of Prest (1,478 meters above sea level), but to a viewpoint and cairn below the summit at 1,363 meters. While the hike is not too demanding, remember that the weather can change quickly in the mountains and rain and fog can make the trail tricky to navigate. Have enough clothing with you to stay warm and dry and take care on a slippery trail.

    Roadbook

The trail is clear and well-marked.

From the car park, the trail leads briefly through the woods to the shoulder of the mountain. There, you’ll turn to the right and begin ascending towards the viewpoint. The trail becomes steeper in parts as you climb the shoulder, with loose stones underfoot. There are some steep drops down towards the fjord, but you don’t need to get too close to the edge. Soon you’ll spot your destination, the large cairn.

From the viewpoint at the cairn you can admire the fjord, with the boats gliding across the surface, and the dramatic mountains which climb steeply up from the water’s edge.
