From Pregarten station, we go to the right, a few hundred meters to the road intersection. There, on the other side of the street, a small road leads down to the Feldaist. We already see the signposts that first lead us to the Klausmühle, an old art mill on the river. After the mill building, the landscape protection area begins. We hike past large and smaller granite stones, which lie there by the hundreds on the shore and in the hillside forest. Later we change sides of the river, pass the first inn Kriehmühle, where there is also a small bathing area at the shore in summer. Again, we change the riverbank and then immediately turn left and continue hiking along the small river.
A little later, the landscape changes from a gorge to an open cultivated landscape. From now on, we hike along cultivated fields and through small forest patches, crossing the Feldaist one last time, which has noticeably reduced its flow speed.
Soon after begins our steepest ascent towards Hochstraß. Upon reaching the federal road, we see a small inn on the left inviting us to stop for a break. Here we change sides of the road, go in front of the bus stop into a narrow street and then later again to the left.
The path then leads again over meadows and along fields, but then a longer section (about 2 km) on an asphalted road begins, which takes us directly to Ried in der Riedmark. We walk to the church, where path No. 170 continues behind the building. We turn right towards the sports center and then continue above a small creek. A few hundred meters after the sports field, a narrow field path begins on the left, leading us up towards a farm. In front of the farm building, a small street leads left to a small crossroads. We can now turn right towards Marbach (where there is an inn) or continue straight along the road (shortcut about 1.7 km).
Where the two paths come back together (crossroad near a wooded area), we now turn left and walk on a beautiful cart track between fields towards Mauthausen. Down at the track of the Mühlkreisbahn, we turn right and walk a stretch along the rails. At the horse farm, we turn right (do not take the overpass) and then again left and now come to the Mauthausen municipal road, which leads us directly to the station. On the right side we see the Pizzeria Balaton and on the left the access road to Mauthausen station.
