The Prax Ice Cave is a through cave, i.e. you exit at a different point than where you entered. The tour is highly interesting and even more enjoyable if done earlier in the year (June/July). The cave was formed during the Tertiary period and the ice ages over millions of years by the eroding action of water and frost. The romantic guided route is about 1 km long, traversing multiple ups and downs through corridors, tunnels, and large halls from east to west through the Prax mountain ridge and back, following the path of the glacial meltwater from the ice age. Beforehand, you hike with the cave guide from Maria Kirchental along trail 613, the Schärdinger Steig ("red"), through forest up to its boundary, where there is a well marking the turnoff to the Prax Ice Cave. At the entrance, you change clothes for the cave tour and prepare your carbide or headlamps. The accompanying cave guide provides expertise and safety in the labyrinth beneath the earth, where the history of the earth unfolds before you. Under favorable conditions, you may also encounter cave-loving animals there (e.g., thorn geometer moths, angle owlets, bats).
