Behind Praterstern, a 10 km long nature park stretches between the Danube Canal and the Danube: the Prater. The former imperial hunting ground was made accessible to the public by Joseph II in 1766 and today, with its recreational and leisure facilities, is one of the most popular excursion destinations in the Vienna city area.
From the transport hub Praterstern with subway station, formerly Vienna North or Nordbahnhof, an underpass leads to the beginning of the Prater main avenue. It is flanked by four rows of chestnut trees and connects Praterstern with the Lusthaus 4.5 km away. Only during major events at the Vienna Stadium or the Vienna Exhibition Grounds may the main avenue be driven on – otherwise, it is Vienna's first and also largest pedestrian zone.Passing the monument to the composer Carl Michael Ziehrer, you reach the artificially constructed Konstantinhügel. Behind it, the Rotundenallee crosses the main avenue. To the right, a large meadow and forest area now spreads out, which we explore on a curve. The Jesuit Meadow hosts open-air festivals every year. Previously, before the construction of the Southeast Tangent A 23, traffic on the Stadionallee flowed across the Prater. Today, the area around Heustadelwasser is traffic-calmed on weekends. On the main avenue, we turn again towards Praterstern.
