Short but very scenic route on the small mountain next to Hinterstoder. A viewing platform at the summit offers a beautiful view of the Priel group and parts of the Warscheneck group of the Dead Mountains.
From the parking lot, head the first few meters along the road and at the first intersection turn left onto "Am Poppenberg," where Poppenberg is already signposted, although the time indication of one hour is relatively generous. At the end of the road, a narrow forest path branches off and leads uphill in switchbacks for the next 25 minutes. The forest repeatedly clears, giving views of the opposite mountains – Großer and Kleiner Priel, Spitzmauer, Ostrawitz, and many more. Then you reach the viewing platform and the adjacent power pole. However, this is not the actual summit. To reach the highest point of Poppenberg, after a short break at the beautiful viewpoint, a look at the map and a few minutes of cross-country hiking were necessary. After the power pole, there was a pile of wood to the left of the path, and beyond it a (admittedly hardly noticeable) game trail leads upwards, quickly disappearing in a thicket of ferns. The highest point of the mountain is marked by a cairn. Although the summit has been climbed, the real goal of the hike is certainly the beautiful viewpoint.
Return is along the same path as ascent.
