With this pilgrimage and hiking trail, you travel from the state capital Graz to the district capital Weiz, thus from the Graz surrounding area to East Styria. You can choose the path for spiritual reasons or simply see it as an opportunity to hike through a beautiful, soothing landscape. This route is very well marked from start to finish, enabling stress-free, pleasant hiking. The line leads northeast over gentle ridges, through beautiful deciduous forests, maintained cultural landscapes, and small villages. The route is marked by seven stations, with the first at the Mariatrost Basilica and the 7th station at Weizberg. The pilgrimage path was opened at the beginning of May 2020 and, through the stations and modern communication methods, offers the possibility to download audio texts and videos to your phone via QR codes to learn about the life and work of Pope Francis. Furthermore, the content of the stations is intended to serve as inspiration and motivation.
The pilgrimage path starts at the Mariatrost Basilica, 473 m. After a few steps downhill, the path goes off to the right and soon reaches the road, where it continues out of town. A section beside the road; then we hike uphill on the left along the Lichtensteinweg, where also hiking trail 753 and the Mariazell route run. On an asphalt road it initially goes somewhat steeper through a settled area and then pleasantly along well-maintained meadows and orchards. Past the Sternwirt Stüberl, slightly downhill to the intersection with the 2nd station "The Provocateur", 512 m. From now on, the Pope Francis path no longer runs parallel to the other trails but leads straight past the health facility Josefhof to the village of Nadischhöhe. Shortly after entering the village, we cross the road and ascend slightly along the ridge path, where the Genusstreffpunkt Höfer is located. Further through the sparsely settled area of Faßlberg, we also encounter hiking trail 1 of the Kumberg municipality.
